Quartet Biography

A brief history of the Carlysle String Quartet.

About the Carlysle String QuartetThe Carlysle String Quartet formed in 2001. Since then, the Quartet has twice been a finalist in The University of Melbourne Chamber Music Competition and performed at numerous University events, including its Faculty of Music Gala Concert and the Melbourne International Brass Festival.

The Quartet studied primarily with violinist and pedagogue William Hennessy, and has tutored with Phillip Green, Keith Crellin, Marco Van Pagee, Mardi McSullea, and members of the renowned Artemis String Quartet.

In July 2005, the Quartet (then under the name Tailem Quartet) was a finalist in the 2005 Australian Chamber Music Competition - broadcast live on ABC Classic FM - where they performed to critical acclaim.

The Quartet has featured on 3MBS FM and has performed throughout Victoria and South Australia. The Quartet also performed in a joint concert at Federation Square's BMW Edge in late 2005. To complete the year they were the featured quartet in residence at the Mt Bulla Music in the Mountains Festival, where they gave three performances to high commendation.

Members of the Quartet have performed and toured both locally and internationally with various ensembles, including the:

  • Melbourne Symphony Orchestra;
  • Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra;
  • Adelaide Symphony;
  • Australia Pro Arte;
  • Academy of Melbourne; and
  • Royal Melbourne Philharmonic, among others.

Members of the Quartet have also been supporting musicians to personalities such as Kiss, Olivia Newton John, Meat Loaf, Stevie Nicks, Dianne Warwick, Luciano Pavarotti, K D Lang, Lior, Tim Minchin, and Sting.
